Loire and Haute-Loire. “It boosts an entire region”: what the AOP designation of origin really brings to our local products

Last June, Roquefort celebrated the 100th anniversary of its Appellation of Origin. It is the first French agricultural product to have received this precious designation. This is an opportunity for Le Progrès to take stock of this distinctive symbol that so highly promotes agriculture in the Loire and Haute-Loire regions.
The controlled designation of origin of Fourme de Montbrison dates back to 1972, an AOC that it then shared with Fourme d'Ambert. In 2002, it obtained its own AOC and, in 2010, its Protected Designation of Origin (PDO recognized at European level).
Hubert Dubien is president of the Fourme de Montbrison union, as well as president of the National Council of Dairy Appellations. So, he's no stranger to defending dairy PDOs.
He often uses this formulation to support these appellations: "For farmers, submitting to an appellation is more a set of opportunities than a set of specifications. In our region, without the appellation, there would no longer be any dairies, which would mean 50 direct jobs...
